Your doctor can detect and diagnose moles on your skin. During a skin exam, your doctor examines your skin from head to toe. If your doctor suspects a mole is cancerous, it will be removed and examined under a microscope at a lab (biopsy). Consult your doctor to determine the best schedule for you. The vast majority of moles do not need to be treated. Makeup can be used to hide a mole if you're self-conscious about it. Consider cutting or plucking hair that grows from a mole near the skin's surface. When you cut or agitate a mole, keep the area clean. Consult your doctor if the mole does not heal. If you're bothered by a mole or see any concerning changes in it, consult your dermatologist about having it surgically removed. Mole removal is a typical outpatient surgery that just takes a few minutes. Before removing the mole, your doctor will numb the area around it, as well as a margin of healthy skin if necessary. It's likely that the surgery will leave a scar that will last a lifetime. Other surgical side effects, such as pigmentary changes around the incision site and keloid scars, are more common in black people.
