The varicella-zoster virus causes chickenpox, a highly contagious disease. Among other symptoms, HPV can cause an itchy, blister-like rash. The rash develops first on the chest, back, and face, then spreads throughout the body. Chickenpox can be fatal, especially in pregnant women, babies, adolescents, adults, and those with compromised immune systems (lowered ability to fight germs and sickness). Anybody who has not had chickenpox or received the chickenpox vaccine is susceptible to the disease. Chickenpox disease typically lasts 4 to 7 days. A rash that develops into itchy, fluid-filled blisters that eventually convert into scabs is the most common symptom of chickenpox. The rash may appear first on the chest, back, and face, then spread throughout the body.
